Dirty Politics Are Not Wanted in South Dakota…

By now you know the Campbell family. You’ve heard the tragic story of how they were forced to choose abortion to save the life of one of their identical twin boys. The procedure saved the life of their beautiful son Brady.

They came to us after their procedure during the time of Referred Law 6. They, like so many of us, thought the voters had spoken on this. But, our opponents are relentless. Another ban is back. And, so are the Campbells.

Because of how profoundly personal this was for them, they were determined and dedicated to doing everything they possibly could to defeat Initiated Measure 11. They knew it would be difficult to put themselves in the public spotlight for continuous scrutiny. They knew the other side would pick them and their situation apart. But, they didn’t know just how far our opponents would go.

Tiffany and Chris Campbell are our heroes for their willingness to speak out in such a hostile and intolerant environment around such a controversial issue. It takes bravery and courage to speak up. We’ve talked to many others who’ve been in similar circumstances who wish they could share their story, but just don’t feel they can; fearful of what it might do to their families, their relationships, their jobs. What the Campbells have done has taken an extreme amount of courage and bravery. We cannot thank them enough.

We knew that when the Campbell’s came forward, our opponents would find ways to misconstrue what they were saying. We knew that they would come under criticism. We thought that any attacks about the Campbells would be directed at us – the campaign. For a while we were right. We were accused of exploiting their situation. We took the hits because we knew the true story. We knew the truth.

But, now, our opponents have gone way too far. They’ve gone from attacking us to smearing the Campbell’s good name. They have aired an ad that has a clip from our ad with the word “DECEPTIVE” printed across their genuine faces. Now, they’ve gone a despicable step further. They’ve sent out a piece of mail to who knows how many people, with the Campbell’s image once again. And, once again, the word “DECEPTIVE” is printed above them.

The Campbells are anything but deceptive. They are honest, hardworking people. They are a loving husband and wife, a good son and daughter, and amazing parents to their three beautiful children. They didn’t ask for this.

Let’s stick to the real issue of this matter. Let’s debate the merits of this measure. Let’s not smear the name of a good South Dakota family.

Having an abortion is never an easy decision for a woman.  It is a very personal, heartfelt choice that no one else can, or has the right to make.
