Exhaustive Study Finds NO Increased Mental Health Risk from Abortion
It’s a favorite slogan for our opponents. They’ve been using it for years on bumper stickers and in the ads they put in front of every South Dakotan, both young and old. Well, you may have wondered “Where’s the evidence?” Yep, I’m talking about those three words that get thrown around by the activists behind abortion ban: “Abortion Hurts Women.”
The truth of the matter is that abortion does NOT hurt women any more than carrying an unexpected pregnancy to term. “There is no credible evidence that a single elective abortion of an unwanted pregnancy in and of itself causes mental health problems for adult women,” according to the American Psychological Association task report last week. That’s right: the APA found NO GREATER RISK of mental health problems from abortion than from delivering that pregnancy.
“How thorough was this report?” you might ask. Well, the APA task force looked at every single peer-reviewed report published in the English language since 1989. Everything. And they found NO EVIDENCE for our opposition’s favorite talking point.
Of course, the activists behind the latest attempt to ban abortion in South Dakota are less than pleased with these results and are hoping that they can make it true by repeating it to every man, woman, and child who will listen. What would they do without their favorite message? Instead of helping women by providing them with accurate information, it is sad to see people fighting to withhold all the facts that don’t fit perfectly with their ideology.

Having an abortion is never an easy decision for a woman. It is a very personal, heartfelt choice that no one else can, or has the right to make.
