I’m old enough to remember what happened to women when abortions were criminalized in an earlier era: they bled to death in anonymous hotel rooms; they suffered massive infections and trauma; they had the babies of rape and incest; and many women brought up babies they were unable to care for adequately. Few doctors would risk their medical licenses to help women, so untrained abortionists got rich and women suffered. It’s important to remember the past if we don’t wish to repeat it.
