New Ad, Companion Website Encourage South Dakotans to Read the Fine Print on Initiated Measure 11

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Today, the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families began airing the second television advertisement as part of their effort to inform voters about the consequences of banning abortion by passing Initiated Measure 11.

Initiated Measure 11, comprised of over 2,400 words that span 6 pages, is a complicated piece of legislation that would have grave consequences for the health and well-being of women and families in South Dakota.  The ad highlights that the ban includes no exception for fatal fetal anomalies and, in that instance, a woman would be forced to carry her pregnancy to term.  Viewers are then referred to www.readthefineprint.org, a companion website launched today by the campaign that displays the full text of Initiated Measure 11 and a list of facts about abortion in South Dakota.

“Proponents of this abortion ban are attempting to paint a rosy, simple picture of what is an incredibly complicated law that would negatively impact the health and well-being of women and families in South Dakota,” said Jan Nicolay, Co-Chair of the South Dakota Campaign for Healthy Families.  “Women and families facing a pregnancy involving a fatal fetal anomaly or other health complications should be able to make their own medical decisions without government intrusion.  Banning abortion is bad policy and Initiated Measure 11 would have serious consequences.”

A copy of the ad may be viewed at www.readthefineprint.org.

I’m voting NO as life does at times give women more than they can handle The ban doesn’t address a woman’s psychiatric or psychological issues, women with substance abuse problems (we all know pregnancy doesn’t cure these issues and the fetus is affected by this)The health exceptions are gray and we all know sometimes it’s unclear if a pregnancy would kill/harm a woman permanently so she needs to make that choice on her own after her doctor’s education!  Police officers don’t belong in a doctor/patient relationship and the extremists-Leslee Unruh’s and Dr. Glen Ridder’s and Mike Rounds of the world will “witch hunt” doctors who conduct abortions due to health of the mother, looking for a loophole to charge that doctor criminally. These individuals and their “followers” have a larger agenda, which includes also banning the morning after pill, birth control pills and they also disagree with tubal ligations and invitro fertilization procedures! Another blatantly missing item in the ban is an exception for the health/condition of the fetus. This proposed ban is chilling to South Dakota women, families and doctors who practice here. The ban doesn’t care about women and doesn’t care about the health of the child-just their own political agenda. Sarah Palin is even scarier! She told Katy Couric in an interview last week that a 15 year old girl who was pregnant with her father’s child should go through with that pregnancy. She also doesn’t believe in the morning after pill. How can any woman relate to this extremism? South Dakota doesn’t! As you know, South Dakotans, some of the most conservative people in the nation voted down a ban that didn’t allow exceptions for rape or incest. Sarah Palin is dangerous to American women! Vote for Obama and Vote no on amendment 11!

Having an abortion is never an easy decision for a woman.  It is a very personal, heartfelt choice that no one else can, or has the right to make.

The people who are promoting this measure admit they want to challenge Roe v. Wade and this is one step in that process.
